What to Expect at a Wine Tasting at Starr Hill Vineyard

A lot of people have never been to a winery before. They want to go — they like wine, they like the idea of a relaxed afternoon in the country — but they are not sure what actually happens when you walk through the door.

Here is the honest answer: it is a lot more relaxed than you think.

At Starr Hill Vineyard & Winery, we have been welcoming first-time visitors since 2005. This is what a tasting visit actually looks like.

You Do Not Need to Know Anything About Wine

This is the most important thing to say upfront. You do not need to know the difference between a Cabernet and a Chardonnay. You do not need to have opinions about tannins or terroir. You do not need to pretend you can smell "hints of blackberry and leather" if you cannot.

Our tasting room is not a test. It is a conversation. You tell us what you like — sweet, fruity, dry, light, bold — and we pour you something that fits. That is it.

If you have never tasted wine before, that is fine too. We will start you somewhere easy and go from there.

What Happens When You Arrive

Pull into the parking area at 861 Bailey Road in Curwensville and walk up to the tasting room. You will be greeted by a member of our team — usually at the bar or just inside the door.

From there, the experience is yours to shape. You can:

  • Do a full tasting — work through a selection of wines with guidance from our team
  • Order a glass or bottle of something you already know you like
  • Take advantage of Free Wine Friday — every Friday, every guest gets one complimentary glass of sweet wine, no purchase necessary

There is no strict format, no timer, and no pressure to buy anything. Stay as long as you like.

How a Wine Tasting Works

If you decide to do a tasting, here is the general flow:

You will start with something approachable. We typically begin with our sweet or semi-sweet wines — they are the most accessible and give you a good baseline for the rest of the tasting. If you already know you prefer dry wines, just say so and we will adjust.

Your pour will be small. Tasting pours are intentionally small — usually an ounce or two — so you can try several wines without overdoing it. The goal is to find what you like, not to fill up on any one thing.

We will tell you about each wine. Where the grapes came from, how the wine was made, what food it pairs well with, what makes it different from the one before it. You can ask as many questions as you want. We genuinely enjoy talking about this.

You can skip anything you do not want. If something sounds like it is not for you, just say so. Nobody is keeping score.

Water is always available. Sipping water between pours helps you taste each wine clearly. We keep it on the bar.

Our Wine List: What You Will Find

Starr Hill Vineyard & Winery makes over 50 wines across eight categories. That is a lot of ground to cover, so here is a quick map:

Sweet wines are where most first-time visitors land. We are known for our fruit wines — wines made from fruits sourced out of Erie, PA that produce flavors you will not find in a typical grape wine. Bright, clean, and genuinely delicious.

Semi-sweet wines hit the middle ground. Enough fruit to be approachable, enough structure to feel like a real wine. These are crowd-pleasers for a reason.

Dry reds and whites are for guests who want something more traditional. Our dry wines are crafted from Pennsylvania-grown grapes and reflect the character of this region — not California, not France, but Pennsylvania.

Specialty and seasonal wines rotate throughout the year. Ask what is new when you come in — there is usually something worth trying that is not on the regular menu.

If you want to explore the full list before your visit, our wine menu is on the website.

What to Do If You Find Something You Love

Buy a bottle. Or two.

Seriously — if you taste something during your visit that you want to have at home, grab a bottle before you leave. Our wines are made in limited quantities and some sell out before the next vintage is ready.

If you cannot make it back in person, we ship to 39 states through VinoShipper. You can order online and have it delivered to your door.

Free Wine Friday: The Easiest Way to Start

If you are on the fence about making a trip, Free Wine Friday is the lowest-commitment way to try us out.

Every Friday, every guest receives one complimentary glass of sweet wine — no reservation, no ticket, no purchase required. It is our way of saying welcome and letting you experience the tasting room without any pressure.

Come in, try a glass, look around, and see if you want to stay. Most people do.

Bringing a Group

The tasting room is a great outing for groups — birthday celebrations, bachelorette parties, date nights, family visits, or just a few friends looking for something different to do on a weekend.

If you are coming with six or more people, give us a call ahead of time at (814) 236-0910 so we can make sure we have space and staff ready for you. Walk-ins are always welcome, but a heads-up helps us take better care of you.

What Else Is on the Property

After your tasting, take a few minutes to walk around. The vineyard views from the property are worth the trip on their own — especially in the fall when the hills are turning.

The gazebo is a favorite spot for photos. The grounds are open and relaxed, and there is no rush to leave once you have finished your tasting.

Starr Hill Vineyard & Winery also hosts weddings, private events, and the annual Groundhog Wine & Shine Festival every January — one of the most popular wine events in Central Pennsylvania. If you are curious about any of those, ask us while you are in.
